POSITION SUMMARY

Counsel individual students and provide group educational and vocational guidance services.

 Essential Functions
    • Counsel individuals to help them understand and overcome personal, social, emotional, or behavioral problems affecting their educational environment.
    • Provide crisis intervention to students when difficult situations occur at schools.
    • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by law, district policies, and administrative regulations.
    • Report cases of suspected domestic abuse or other family problems and encourage students or parents to seek additional assistance from mental health professionals.
    • Assess student needs.
    • Counsel students regarding educational issues such as school adjustment, truancy, and study habits.
    • Collaborate with teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of school programs.
    • Observe students during classroom and play activities to evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
    • Plan and conduct orientation programs and group conferences to promote the adjustment of individuals to new life experiences such as transitioning to middle school.
    • Attend meetings, educational conferences, and training workshops and serve on committees.
    • Address community groups, faculty, and staff members to explain available counseling services.
    • Sponsor extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.
    • Provide training/professional development for staff on counseling-related topics.
    • Participate in building committees to meet the individual needs of students such as developing academic intervention plans or behavior plans.
    • Coordinate student services and referrals with outside agencies.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of counseling theory and techniques.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of child and adolescent development.
    • Evaluate students' or individuals' abilities, interests, and personality characteristics using tests, records, interviews, or professional sources.
    • Establish goals for the counseling program according to the setting and the students served.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of state and federal regulations and of resources both within and beyond the school and district.
    • Plan the counseling program as integrated with the regular school program.
    • Develop a plan to evaluate the counseling program.
    • Create an environment of respect and rapport.
    • Establish a culture for productive communication.
    • Manage routines and procedures.
    • Establish standards of conduct and contributing to the culture for student behavior throughout the school.
    • Assist students and teachers in the formulation of academic and/or personal/social plans based on knowledge of students.
    • Use counseling techniques in individual and classroom programs.
    • Arrange resources to meet needs.
    • Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness.
    • Reflect on practice and participate in professional development activities to enhance professional learning.
    • Communicate with families.
    • Personal/Social Counseling 9th through 12th-grade students
    • Administers ASVAB Test and follow-up
    • Athletic Eligibility Guidance- maintains up-to-date NCAA approved course list; uploads transcripts/works with students to ensure they are on track to meet NCAA and NAIA eligibility guideline, completes NCAA/NAIA tasks including uploading final transcripts 
    • Military Recruitment & Military Education Coordinator- works with military recruiters to ensure they understand our school policy; works with the state military families liaison to support district military families, coordinates recruitment outreach with each branch 
    • Senior Seminar(College & Career Planning for 12th graders)- regular sessions with seniors through their English classes to do post-secondary planning
    • Advisory- a daily 2nd period work time for any student who needs help with anything related to academic success, college or career exploration, preparation, or applications, and scholarships
    • College & Career Platform Coordinator (Xello)- works to update each year/semester; adding to Links and Resources; teaching students how to use
    • Coordinates with community donors and committees for scholarships
    • Coordinates college recruiter visits
    • Assists in administering BHS Athletic Awards eligibility and voting, and Scholarships
    • Maintains updated School Profile
    • Maintains up-to-date website related to college and careers, scholarships, personal exploration 
    • Shares information relative to college application and scholarship application deadlines via social media and Google Classroom
    • Assists families in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
    • Coordinates activities such as Financial Aid Night, College Fair, College and Career Tech Fair
    • Collaborates with the Transition SPED program to coordinate Arkansas Rehabilitation Services to connect qualifying students with services, interviews, paperwork
      • Participate in a professional community.
      • Maintain professionalism with all staff members.
      • Report to the proper authorities any cases of suspected child endangerment, neglect, or abuse.
      • Adhere to all policies of the District.
      • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or other administrators.

 

SKILLS & ABILITIES         

        Education:                              Master's Degree in School Counseling (four-year college) Required, Field of                                                                           Study: Counseling

                                                       

        Experience:                             Previous experience as a school counselor preferred.

        Computer Skills:                     Shall be able to demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency with computers and                                                               programs associated with the position.

        Certifications & Licenses:       Current Arkansas teaching license required.

        Other Requirements:              1. Successful completion of pre-employment background checks.
